OCR: COLONIZATION Objective Mars TERRAFORMING A LOOK INTO THE FUTURE In the early 20th century, a few thinkers were already boldly exploring the idea of colonizing the Red Planet. The Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), who laid the foundations of modern astronautics, wrote in 1911, "Man will not remain on Earth forever. Always seeking light and space, he will first adventure timidly out of the atmosphere, then gradually conquer the entire solar system." Renowned German engineer Wernher von Braun-who had developed the V-2 missile in Nazi Germany and perfected the V-2 technology for the US after World War II-published his "Mars Project" in 1952. The first complete plan for an expedition to Mars, it called for a fleet of ten spacecraft, Biosphere Il carrying at least 70 passengers. The propellant would be a hydrazine-nitric acid mix (rather than the more efficient, but hard-to-store hydrogen-oxygen fuel). Based on Walter Hohmann's 1925 studies of interplanetary trajectories, Braun estimated the travel time between the planets at 270 days. MARS BETAT
